The Law of Cause and Effect is very important for those on a spiritual path. It states that whatever we do has an effect, and that nothing happens by chance. So, “as you reap so shall you sow” applies very aptly here. It is closely related to the law of Karma, and applies to the karmic principles.
A good example of the working of this Law concerns a friend of mine who was house hunting and thought she had found her dream house. Problems to do with planning permission arose from unauthorised improvements done earlier, and she pulled out at the last minute using this as an excuse, causing great inconvenience to many people. The real reason was that she had changed her mind. When she came to sell her next home having herself done some improvements without the necessary planning permissions, her house sale fell through in exactly the same circumstances as had occurred to her. It was like a boomerang coming back to hit her.
So, you see, if you do something that is perhaps a little unkind, thoughtless or malicious, something very similar will occur to you too. If you are able to observe your actions before you undertake them to ensure they are ethical and from the heart, with best intent, you will know the outcome, whatever it is, will be the best one possible for everyone involved in that situation. A loving action will bring love to you, a negative action will not be so good.
